John Dinse

Profile:
John DinseMr. Dinse began practice with the firm in 1950 and served as managing partner for 25 years. Although he retired from active practice in 1993, he remains active as Counsel to the firm, and regularly consults with attorneys in the firm on legal issues. Mr. Dinse also remains active in civic, cultural and professional activities, and is frequently involved in the mediation of civil disputes.

During his 43 years of active practice, Mr. Dinse was one of Vermont's pre-eminent trial lawyers. His litigation practice included trials in all state and federal courts, focusing particularly on the defense of medical malpractice, product liability and other insured claims.

Mr. Dinse has been a leader in the profession, serving as President of the Vermont Bar Association (1978-79) and President and Chair of the Defense Research Institute (1980-1981), among many other leadership positions.

Mr. Dinse also served for many years as general counsel of Middlebury College and Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, and his experience in the educational and health care fields provides a foundation for the firm's current practice in these areas.

Mr. Dinse is a member of the Chittenden, Vermont (Board of Managers, 1974-1980; President, 1978-1979), and American Bar Associations; the American Judicature Society (Director, 1975-1979); the American Academy of Hospital Attorneys; the Association of Defense Attorneys; the International Association of Defense Counsel; the Defense Research Institute (Director, 1975-1981; President, 1980; Chairman of the Board, 1981); the New England Bar Association (Director, 1977-1980); the American Law Institute; the National Association of College and University Attorneys; and the American Board of Trial Advocates. He is also a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, the American College of Trial Lawyers, and the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Mr. Dinse served on the Vermont Waterways Commission (1962-1963), the Vermont Judicial Nominating Board (Chairman, 1966-1977), and the Vermont Municipal Bond Bank (1980-1993).

Community Activities:
Mr. Dinse has been a director or trustee of the Elizabeth Lund Home, the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont Board of Governors, the Burlington YWCA, the Vermont Diabetes Association, the Lake Champlain Yacht Club, the Champlain Maritime Society, and the Vermont Arthritis Foundation. He is a vice-president and a member of the Governing Board of Directors of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra.
